The purpose of this document is to summarize system hardware and software requirements for the platforms on which Ross Systems applications and 3rd party tools are currently certified to run. Please note that these specifications are subject to change. Consult your Ross salesperson or pre-sales representative before making any purchase decisions. Listed below are the main components of a client/server system.
The Ross applications are designed to run in an “open systems” environment
utilizing the most popular and powerful hardware, operating systems and
relational database management systems on the market. System configurations
may vary widely based on your organization’s requirements and budget, however,
the following pages represent our recommended basic configurations by platform
for a small, medium and large company, the size being dependent upon the
average number of concurrent users on the main server.
This is the main system on which the Ross applications and database
engine reside.
Supported platforms:
HP 9000 (HP-UX), Alpha (DEC-UNIX, OpenVMS, NT), VAX (OpenVMS), RS/6000 (AIX), Wintel-based servers (NT), Fujitsu DS-90 (UNIX), Siemens Nixdorf (SINIX)
Installed on the application server (or a clustered database server),
the relational database management systems contain all the application’s
data metadata.
Supported RDBMS:
Oracle 7 (Universal, Enterprise and Workgroup-based servers) Oracle Rdb (Digital-based platforms only) SQL-Server (planned for version 7.0/2H98)
Client/server applications and tools require an Ethernet network (10/100
base-T) and TCP/IP support (Decnet also supported on Digital systems)
on both the desktop and application server. Dial-in and/or remote access
servers are recommended for
WAN-based connections to the server where telecommunication costs are
high and/or quality of service (especially latency time) is poor.
Ross applications and 3rd party tools currently support the Microsoft Windows platform (Windows 95, NT Client). Refer to the application’s and 3rd party tool’s product release notes for more specific information.

Refer to the following configuration guidelines for personal computers which are to be used as a clients running any GUI-based Ross-licensed applications or 3rd party products. Note that on all Ross-supported application server platforms (with the exception of NT) a personal computer may also be used in terminal emulation mode (refer to the Ross product’s Release Notes for any exceptions). PC’s to be used exclusively in a terminal emulation mode (or as a RAS-based “thin” client) may differ significantly from the guidelines below (less resources are required and different operating systems are supported for RAS-based clients).
CPU: Intel 80486- or Pentium-based PC with mouseNote: At this time Ross Systems has not certified any of its client/server products on any network computer (NC) or network PC devices. Any customer wishing to run the Ross-licensed products on these devices should discuss this with the respective Ross product manager.
Memory: Min 16 MB (24 MB for NT Client); 32 MB recommended
Disk Storage: 150 to 300+ MB (minimum is 15 MB just to install)
Display: 14” Display (color or gray scale VGA)
Controller Card: Ethernet (10/100 base-T) with working connection to server
Operating System: Windows 3.11, DOS 5.0+, Windows 95, Windows, NT
Protocol Software: TCP/IP (bundled MS Windows stack OK) recommended
DECnet for Pathworks-based systems also acceptable
Additional Peripheral Devices & Software
Refer to the following configuration guidelines when considering an Intel-based remote access server (RAS) which is to be used to implement one or more GUI-based Ross applications or 3rd party products over a wide-area network (WAN). A RAS configuration is usually recommended where network bandwidths and/or quality of service over WAN-based connections is cost prohibitive or so poor that system response times are unacceptable.
Another reason for RAS-based operations is to support multiple desktop environments (e.g. older DOS-based PC’s, Mac’s, etc), allow the use of a web browser for accessing the applications or to simply provide a redundant means of access to the Ross applications or 3rd party tools.
Note: Remote access servers should be dedicated to serving remote client connections; it is not recommended that the box be used as an e-mail server, firewall or domain name server in order keep machine resources dedicated to the RAS functions.
