Centura Announces Record Third Quarter Financial Results
Centura Software Corporation, a leading supplier of embedded databases
and application development tools, today announced net income for the third
quarter of 1998 of $1.1 million or 8% of revenue and $0.04 per diluted
share. This compares with net income of $0.1 million in the third quarter
of last year, or $0.01 per diluted share. This represents a 907% improvement
in third quarter net income, over the same period for 1997. Net revenue
was $14.1 million in the third quarter of 1998 compared with $13.7 million
in the third quarter of 1997.
"We are pleased with our performance as reflected by our third quarter
income, the year over year third quarter net revenue growth and the underlying
invoicing growth. We view these results as continuing evidence that the
Company is on track with its plans," says Scott Broomfield, CEO for Centura.
"I am especially happy with the performance in Central Europe, rebounding
from a difficult second quarter to achieve one of the highest invoicing
levels in the region’s history. International revenues accounted for 52%
in the third quarter of 1998, compared to 49% in the second quarter of
this year and 57% in the third quarter of 1997. I personally spent a good
portion of the summer in Europe, meeting with existing, new and prospective
customers and was pleased with how well they perceive our products and
the direction in which the Company is headed. We added more than 100 new
customers worldwide in the third quarter, providing further evidence of
support for the Company’s products and strategy."
Recent accomplishments for the Company include the release of SQL Exchange,
an advanced replication/synchronization connectivity product for multiple
databases and the introduction of the demo version of the first relational
database for smart cards. Significant strategic relationships announced
during the third quarter include Centura’s partnership with Novell optimizing
SQLBase for Netware 5.0 and Centura’s partnership with emWare, a leading
provider of distributed device networking software. EmWare’s EMIT, bundled
with Centura’s micro database and thin application server, will enable
devices with 8 and 16 bit micro controllers to access corporate networks,
directory services and business logic.
"We are delighted with our performance as indicated by our net income
of $1.1 million for the quarter. In addition to it being the highest third
quarter net income in the Company’s history, it is the first time since
1994 that third quarter net revenue exceeded that of second quarter," comments
John Bowman, CFO for Centura. "Net revenue of $14.1 million grew by 8%
over second quarter net revenue in 1998 and 3% over the same period in
1997. Deferred revenue balances were reduced by only $0.3 million in the
third quarter of 1998 compared with $2.3 million in the third quarter of
1997, indicating a greater contribution in the third quarter from current
business activity. Centura continued to generate positive cash flow as
EBITDA was $1.7 million in third quarter 1998, an improvement of $2.6 million
over the third quarter of 1997."
